About Geography
Geography is divided into physical, Indian and world geography. Physical geography explains how the Earth works: landforms, rocks, climate, winds, ocean currents and natural processes. Indian geography covers the country's rivers, mountains, soils, monsoon, agriculture, minerals and industries. World geography covers continents, major rivers, mountain ranges, straits and important places on the map.
Many questions can be answered by understanding a process rather than memorising it, for example why the monsoon arrives when it does. Map-based facts (which river flows where, which strait joins which seas) are also common, so practising with an atlas pays off.
Exams that test it
How to prepare
- Keep an atlas or map app open while you practise, and locate every place you read about.
- Learn river systems as a whole: origin, tributaries (left and right bank) and where they end.
- Understand the causes behind climate and landforms; it helps with unfamiliar questions.
- Revise Indian agriculture and minerals state by state, with the leading producer of each.
