About Indian Polity
Indian Polity is the study of how India is governed: the Constitution, the rights and duties of citizens, and the institutions that make, carry out and interpret laws. It covers the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, the Directive Principles, Parliament, the President and Council of Ministers, the Supreme Court and High Courts, and the amendments that have shaped the Constitution since 1950.
Questions in this subject are often precise. They ask for an Article number, a constitutional body, a procedure such as how a Bill becomes law, or a landmark judgment. Because the facts are fixed in the Constitution, Polity is one of the most scoring sections once the basics are clear.
Exams that test it
How to prepare
- Learn the structure first (Parts, Schedules, key Articles) before memorising details.
- Group related Articles together, for example 52–78 for the Union Executive and 124–147 for the Supreme Court.
- Watch the exceptions: what lapses when the Lok Sabha is dissolved, which Bills need special majorities.
- Revise landmark judgments with the principle each one established, not just the case name.
